Reverse Glass Painted Pumpkin

I made this rustic Fall decor piece by using reverse painting on plexiglass then mounted it on a piece of distressed wood using upholstery tacks. I love this technique because the plexiglass top always gives your piece such a smooth finished look even if you arent exactly careful in your painting.
First you have to choose an image. You can either draw it by hand, trace it, or print it out from your computer. I would keep it simple if you are experimenting with this reverse technique for the first time.
I purchased some of the plexiglass on Amazon already cut into 5x7 pieces and they also sell it at Hobby Lobby and you can cut them down. I have both in my stash. They end up being the same price. I used a 5x7 and (my sister) drilled the holes in each of the corners.
I placed the plexiglass over the drawing of my pumpkin and used my DecoColor paint pen to outline it in reverse. If your image is symmetrical, you obviously don't have to worry about reversing the image. Once the black lines were drawn I painted over top of them with the paint. I used regular enamel paint from Home Depot.
This image I used was what I call a coloring book image where one color goes in each space, no overlapping and no details. It is a good place to start.
After the plexiglass was completely dry I placed it on the wood that I distressed earlier with the painted side down and hammered the upholstery tacks through the holes. I purchased the tacks at Walmart.
That was all there was to it and I love the outcome.
As you can see in the photos Ive included, while the back of the painting looks a mess, the front is beautifully finished!

Great tutorial Kathy. When you go over the black lines of the outline with the white paint, do you have to worry about the black lines smearing?
